Incrementality is replacing easy attribution stories
Why marketing teams are testing what caused growth instead of trusting the last platform that claimed a conversion.

the problem with perfect-looking dashboards
Every advertising platform sees a different slice of the journey and has an incentive to show value. A customer may encounter several channels before converting, while some would have purchased without the final ad. Attribution can organise observations, but it does not automatically prove causation.
Incrementality compares an exposed group with a credible counterfactual. The question is simple: how many additional outcomes happened because of the activity? The experiment is the difficult part.
practical ways to test
Depending on scale, teams can use platform conversion-lift studies, audience holdouts, regional tests or timed interventions. Google announced new GeoX and Meridian measurement tools in 2026, reflecting a wider move toward causal evidence and marketing-mix modelling.
- choose one decision the test will inform
- avoid changing offer and targeting halfway through
- use business outcomes rather than only clicks
- record external factors that could distort the comparison
use experiments to improve judgment
Not every campaign needs an advanced model. A disciplined small test can reveal whether a channel adds reach, shifts demand or merely harvests existing intent. Repeat tests because markets and creative decay change the answer.
The value is not a single universal ROI number. It is a stronger planning habit: state the hypothesis, define the counterfactual, measure the result and change the budget accordingly.
