Google AI Mode changes search behaviour—here is what SEO teams should change
How longer, conversational and planning-led searches change content strategy, measurement and website experience.

search intent is getting more detailed
Google reported in May 2026 that the average AI Mode query was three times the length of a traditional search query, while planning-related queries were growing faster than AI Mode overall. The practical implication is that users are providing context upfront instead of refining several short keyword searches.
A page built around a narrow phrase may not satisfy that journey. Businesses need content that helps a reader define options, understand trade-offs, verify suitability and decide what to do next.
design content around decisions
Map the questions that appear before a purchase: what the service includes, who it is for, likely constraints, alternatives, process, evidence and common failure modes. Connect those answers with relevant service and portfolio pages so both people and crawlers can follow the topic.
- lead with a direct answer before expanding
- use descriptive headings and real examples
- include images when the topic is visual or location-based
- keep key information available in HTML and return HTTP 200
do not abandon classic SEO
AI search does not remove the need for crawlability, internal linking, sensible metadata or page speed. Google's own guidance says the fundamentals remain relevant. The difference is that low-value commodity copy becomes even easier to replace inside an answer.
The defensible advantage is first-hand knowledge: original visuals, clear methods, local context, verified facts and a page experience that helps the visitor complete the next step.
