Multimodal search is growing: your images now carry search intent
A practical visual SEO guide for businesses preparing for image, camera, voice and text search journeys.

search is no longer only typed
Google says more than one in six US searches now use voice or images, with image searches growing rapidly in AI Mode. That behaviour matters beyond retail. A buyer can photograph a machine part, venue, product, document or design and ask a contextual question about it.
Businesses with generic stock photos provide little visual evidence. Original images of the actual offer, interface, location, team process or completed work can become useful retrieval signals and improve trust after the click.
make images understandable
Use descriptive filenames, accurate alt text and nearby copy that explains why the image matters. Create a stable page for the subject instead of publishing important visuals only inside social feeds or scripts that crawlers cannot access.
- show the whole object and important details
- add captions when context is not obvious
- use modern formats and responsive dimensions
- avoid embedding critical claims only inside the pixels
treat visual content as evidence
A good image should answer a question: what was built, how a space is configured, what a product includes or what an outcome looks like. Pair it with factual copy and a clear next action.
Visual SEO is not an excuse to produce endless decorative images. Fewer, original and well-described assets are more useful than a large library of interchangeable stock scenes.
